Services
There are three generations of Matthews' happily living at Aberhyddnant.
Paul and Liz who live in the main farm house, their daughters Bethan and Nicola and now their grandson Lloyd.
Paul moved to Aberhyddnant from Atherstone with his mum and dad in 1983 and together worked to rebuild a long neglected farm into a productive area of land able to support the family and conserve the beautiful local countryside.
Paul and I married in 1985 and moved into the farmhouse in 1994.
Pauls' parents moved to Wales initially because of their love for Welsh Mountain Ponies which they had been breeding for many years and after moving to Aberhyddnant they had continued success.
Heating - biomass batch wood boiler which is lit every couple of days.
This is great because we have lots of timber on the farm and will be coppicing native woodland for future supplies.
The boiler simply replaced our existing oil boiler so all the radiators etc were already in place!
If we get a bit chilly we light the fire in the sitting room for cosy winter evenings (sometimes it gets too hot!).
We have lots of insulation made from re-cycled glass keeping the heat in the right place.
Hot water - the wood boiler is supplemented by solar thermal water heating in the summer months, and sometimes in the winter.
Since moving to the Aberhyddnant in 1983 the Matthews family has worked towards running a viable farm whilst trying to conserve and promote biodiversity.
Today Aberhyddnant is a family run, 220 acre organic hill farm in Crai producing quality lamb, pork, beef and free-range eggs whilst helping to enhance the environment.
All our animals are reared to strict organic standards where welfare is the highest priority.
We have a whole farm environmental policy under the Glas Tir scheme, which, combined with our organic principles, maintains the fertility of the land and creates a variety of wildlife habitats.
As you may have noticed the Matthews are very aware of the countryside around us and our role in preserving it for the future.
Since moving to Aberhyddnant we have created six stream or spring fed pools, three of which were stocked in 1987 with native Brown Trout that are now naturally regenerating.
These pools are a haven to wetland wildlife visited regularly by wild duck, geese, Moor Hens and Dabchick and come alive with mayfly and damsel flies during spring and summer.
The farm has 12 hectares/30 acres of woodland being a mix of original Ancient woodland, wet woodland, which has been fenced off to promote regeneration.
Step One - Masses of insulation, low energy light bulbs, wood burners, more energy efficient alliances.
No we are not mad, there are some advantages to living in Wales, and I'm not talking about all that lovely lamb and lush green hillsides.
I talking about the reason for them; soft rain forming mountain streams.
Water running consistanly down a hillside is ideal for a micro-hydro project.
Of course sometimes there is insufficient water but our bills are minimal and we get paid for producing all the electricity whether we use it or not!
