Penralley House
Penralley House offers spacious grounds with a beautiful garden with amazing views of the Elan Valley. Take a look at our rooms, or check our availability. Rhayader and the surrounding areas boasts a huge amount of things to do for all the family. Take a look at our "What to do in the local area" page here. Penralley House has a long and illustrious history - and was home to the architect of the Elan Valley Dam.

Penralley House is a luxury bed and breakfast located close to the town centre of Rhayader, which has a good selection of facilities including a variety of shops, cafes, pubs, a leisure centre as well as parks and plenty of open spaces for outdoor activities. All are welcome, including walkers, motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and bird watchers!

The house benefits from "on-site", off street parking. A beautiful Georgian town house built about 1774 and extended in 1876, Penralley House has a striking faade of local granite, and a stunning Victorian yellow brick rear overlooking a lush large garden.
Services
Following holidays in Wales, Steve & Karen visited Rhayader and the Elan Valley and decided to move to the area for a change in lifestyle from that of the hectic south east of England.
This decision was helped by the beautiful upspoilt countryside surrounding Rhayader and the friendly local people.
Penralley House needed a great deal of restoration and this continues with some parts of the house and grounds.
As the house is large Steve and Karen decided to run a bed and breakfast, not only to ensure that they could continue to care for the house, but also to share the beautiful historic building with others.
The James family inherited Penralley House in 1774 from James Jones, who's family possibly owned the property since 1656.
The James family remained at Penralley and developed the estate from wealth acquired by their employment in the Royal Navy.
The present house believed to have been built in 1776.
In 1876 Stephen William Williams extended Penralley House by removing the entire rear section of the house and replacing it with the Victorian yellow brick we see today.
This was an enormous engineering project and would be a feat of engineering even with present construction equipment and knowledge.
Penralley House has five luxury B&B rooms, all en-suite and all tastefully decorated in keeping with this historic building.
There are views out to the local countryside and across the beautiful grounds.
The rooms are named after trees in the grounds and the local area.
We have a luxurious Four-Poster bed in our "Beech Room", and spacious King Sized beds in the "Cedar Room" and the "Oak Room", a double bed in the "Bramble Room", and we can cater for families in our "Holly Room" which is a twin room.
What to do in Mid Wales and Rhayader?
Within the local area there is much to offer, with Cardigan Bay and the west coast, Aberystwyth and the Cambrian Mountains, Brecon Beacons and north Wales all within driving distance.
The Elan Valley reservoirs and estate are within 3 miles and Gigrin farm, the Kite feeding station a few minutes along South Street.
Being near the Kite feeding station these beautiful birds are often seen flying over the garden and using the trees as impromptu dining tables.
The Elan Valley also enjoys Dark Sky Status, due to the lack of light pollution and on a clear night, there are fantastic views of the night sky.
