read more › Built in the 19th Century, Holbeck Ghyll was bought in 1888 by Lord Lonsdale, one of the richest men in the country, to use as his hunting lodge. The "Yellow Earl", as he was known, was the first president of the Automobile Association and bequeathed the famous Lonsdale Belt to boxing. Between the 1920's and 1973, Holbeck Ghyll was a private house (see a selection of photographs kindly provided by Mr. Beattie). In 1973 it was converted to a hotel and remained in the same ownership until 1988 when it was acquired by new private owners.

Although we have a small number of bedrooms that are dog friendly, dogs are not permitted in the restaurant. read more › Most guests arrive by their own car, however we will be more than delighted to help arrange transfers and transport for passengers arriving by rail or bus. Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel is located between Windermere and Ambleside, high on a hillside, close to the village of Troutbeck. M6 Junction 36, A591 to Windermere. Continue past Windermere, 3 miles towards Ambleside, pass Brockhole Visitors Centre then turn right towards Troutbeck (Holbeck Lane). We are half a mile on the left. Virgin Trains operate fast trains out of London Euston to Oxenholme (Lake District) with a journey time of two and a half hours.

read more › Enjoy the stunning views from the Holbeck Ghyll helicopter as this video enjoys scenes from a tour to the hotel via one of the most scenic routes in the Lake Distict. Please try to avoid flying over the neighbouring properties to the south of the hotel and use a north westerly route wherever possible when approaching and leaving the hotel (where safe to do so). If due to weather conditions a southern route is required, please try to maintain a 500ft clearance over the properties immediately south of the hotel site and adopt a high approach, this is for the benefit of our neighbours and your adopting of this advice is appreciated.
