read more › Originally built in the 1850s as a private house, the six-bedroom and one bathroom property that was to become Rothay Garden hotel was originally named Rothay Bank, being on the banks of the river Rothay. Like most grand houses of the day, this country house was built as a home for one of the landed gentry, presumably one of the wealthy landowners or mine owners, as this was a wealthy time for the Lake District, with copper, lead and slate being in big demand and tourism just beginning. Rothay Bank first became a hotel or guest house in the 1960's and went through many guises before becoming the property before you today.

The home of Wordsworth for many years, his home is now open to the public and includes a fascinating museum. The village also offers a variety of galleries, outdoor pursuits shops, Sarah Nelson's famous Grasmere Ginger Bread and much more! There is much to see and do around the village with so many famous and picturesque walks which encircle the vale of Grasmere. The area is a veritable paradise for experienced as well as novice walkers!

GRASMERE'S MOST FAMOUS SON - William Wordsworth - perhaps the man who epitomises the Lake District more than any other, Wordsworth lived in and around Grasmere for most of his life. Nearby Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount are Wordsworth attractions, as are the main fells which inspired his immortal poem, beginning "I wandered lonely as a cloud."

Perhaps the most famous is Sarah Nelson's Gingerbread Shop, which is situated at the heart of the village and has been producing gingerbread to Sarah Nelson's original recipe since the nineteenth century. Other popular shops include the Heaton Cooper Art Gallery, the Lakes Crafts and Antiques Centre, and Barney's Newsbox - one of the best shops in the lakes for maps, jigsaws and magazines - just along the road from Rothay Garden.
