Pen-y-gwryd Hotel
Welcome to the Pen-Y-Gwryd Hotel, a long established and traditional British mountaineer's hotel in Snowdonia, North Wales. Our historic hotel at the foot of Snowdon is where Hillary and Tenzing trained for the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, and where today's visitors can get a real taste of adventure in the beautiful wilderness of Snowdonia National Park.

When Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first stood on the top of Mount Everest, only a handful of people knew the debt of gratitude they owed not only to the mountains of North Wales but also to a little hotel in the lee of Snowdon. It was at the Pen y Gwryd Hotel (or 'PyG') that members of the 1953 Everest Expedition stayed during their training for that historic adventure, and it subsequently became - and remains - a place of pilgrimage for mountaineers the world over.

With an introduction by Jan Morris, the Times reporter who accompanied that first successful expedition and broke the story to the world, The Pen y Gwryd Hotel: Tales from the Smoke Room tells the story of 'one of the great climbing inns of Europe' through series of anecdotes, reminiscences and tributes, including contributions by a veritable who's who of walkers, climbers and writers.
Services
Built in 1810 as a remote mountain farmhouse, extended and used as a coaching inn and later as the training headquarters of the first successful Everest climbing expedition in 1953, and now run as a haven safe from the relentless grind of modernity, there are few hotels that can boast such a unique history and location as the Pen-y-Gwryd.
Stay here and you have the genuine chance to engage with beauty, tradition and history.
We'll look after you too, with wholesome food, drink and good company.

In the lee of Snowdon (Eryri to the Welsh) stands the inn Pen-y-Gwryd (PYG to generations of climbers), and here I have come to think about Mount Everest (Chomolungma to the Sherpas).
A national treasure, in the same family since 1947, this delightfully eccentric climbing inn has changed mercifully little over the years and offers simple pleasures in abundance.
After a day spent walking in Snowdonia, come home to a sauna in the garden followed by a dip in the natural pool, then a hearty dinner announced by a gong and a night in one of the plain, spotless bedrooms, with no frills except fluffy towels, monogrammed linen and a decent bar of Imperial Leather soap.
Snowdonia ('Eryri' in Welsh) is without doubt one of Britain's most beautiful mountain areas, and the Pen y Gwryd, situated alone below the very highest peaks, is surrounded by fantastic hillwalking opportunities and some of the world's first classic rock-climbs.
The scenery is stunning.
You don't need a car to explore here; you only need to step outside and breathe the pure mountain air or ford the clear streams.
And, though we're keen on all things bygone, hobnail boots are no longer de rigueur among our guests.
