Set in the rural heartland of Dumfries and Galloway near Castle Douglas, our holiday lodges enjoy splendid views of grassy hills, woodland and wildlife. This idyllic setting offers a relaxing option for couples, families and friends. Visitors to Queenshill are welcome to wander through the grounds of the estate, including our walled garden. You'll also find history and wildlife walking trails, an interactive family Faerie Trail, a coffee shop, pony trekking and riding centre close by on our estate at Barstobrick.
Services
The name Queenshill was established after a visit from Mary Queen of Scots.
She was fleeing from her defeat at the battle of Langside in 1568 and is said to have stopped to rest and take refreshments here before sailing to England.
Queen Elizabeth I ordered her to be killed.
In the early 19th century, the estate became the home of Colonel Walter Montgomerie Neilson, son of the late James Beaumont Neilson, Esq., the celebrated inventor of the 'Hot-Blast.'
Not as strange as it sounds!
James Beaumont Neilson was a Scottish inventor whose hot-blast process greatly increased the efficiency of smelting iron.
Peacefully positioned, well equipped and fully insulated, these timber lodges offer you first-class accommodation within natural surroundings.
The lodges at Queenshill Country Cottages are open all year round offering short breaks as well as longer holidays too.
Our flexible approach gives you a greater choice when it comes to planning your holiday.

Our visitors are welcome to wander through the grounds of the estate, which include our walled garden.
Queenshill Estate in Kirkcudbrightshire is a delightful mixture of glorious parkland, pretty woodland and undulating hills - the perfect landscape in which to wander and roam freely.
In its heyday, the estate had what we would now consider a 'stately home' dominating its immediate landscape.
You can still see the site where it stood.
Sadly the house is no longer, but memories and photographs of the house still exist.
As one wanders around the leafy estate it's not difficult to imagine living a 'Downton Abbey' style existence - whether upstairs or down!
For bird watchers - we're delighted to be on the official 'Red Kite Trail' and these birds can regularly be seen whooping through the skies above nearby Barstobrick Hill.
You should also be on the look out for Mallard duck, lapwing as well as Buzzards, Reed Bunting and Sedge Warblers.
As well as duck, our ponds and wetland areas support support quite a few rare, endangered species of plants, mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
Among the brightly coloured plants that thrive here you'll see Ragged Robin and tiny orchids.
Queenshill has its own livery yard with grazing all year round.
So if you'd like to bring your horse on holiday with you, you can - subject only to availability of space.
There are miles of fantastic off-road riding with lovely tracks and woodland rides to enjoy all over the estate.
Barstobrick runs a programme of equestrian events all year round including competitions which visitors are sometime eligible to enter.
If you don't have your own horse the centre hires out horses and ponies to visitors for trekking.
