Edge Knoll Holiday Cottages
The Holiday Cottages are 17th Century Barn Conversions in the Durham Dales, West of Bishop Auckland at the foot of the Pennine Hills in County Durham and next to a registered Area of Natural Beauty. The cottages are child friendly and pet friendly. They have the rustic charm of the 17th century Listed Grade 2 stone built farm cow byres they once were.

Both Cottages are pet friendly, two well behaved dogs are welcome in the cottage but not in the bedrooms or on the furniture please. If your dog is used to sleeping in your bedroom please bring your own duvet covers and sheets. Guests are expected to clean up after their pets so that other guest and children can be safe. Wildlife watching, there have been more than eighty species of birds seen at Edge Knoll farm.

Badgers, hares, stoats and weasels are all there for the patient wild life observer. Hamsterley holiday cottages are also an ideal base for exploring from the Scottish Borders to York as well as the Durham Coast and its beautiful beaches.

This two bedroom animal friendly cottage is let on condition that your well behaved pet is not allowed on the beds or furniture and is under your control at all times, as well of course as not being left alone either in or outside the cottage while you are with us.
The views from both of these bedrooms are over open country and wildlife can be seen most of the time.
Children especially love to spot the wide variety of birds passing outside.
Especially our resident Barn Owls.
The twin bed room looks out toward the village of Witton le Wear about half a mile away over open fields and river side.
A break for the under twelves just about four miles from your cottage.
Hall hill Farm is the ideal place to take the kids and wear them out while you sit and watch the energy being used up, enjoy a snack and enjoy the sun.
With farm animals to feed, tractor rides, indoor play area for the really little ones.
Cafe, snack bar, climbing frames, huge rubber pillow bouncing area, and what really made our great grandson happy was the "fire a water filled balloon at your parents area" a huge catapult with water filled balloons provided and parents having to hide behind perforated screens, kids of all ages love it, plus you get the chance to fire balloons back at the kids.
Set grandly on a promontory next to the equally impressive Durham Castle (click for Castle Web page)with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping round, the profile of the World Heritage Site is instantly recognisable to people travelling on the East Coast Main Line Railway.
Take a picnic or eat in the restaurants on site.
Fish and chips served from a traditional street vendor's caravan fried over coal fired chip pans and using beef dripping in the old fashioned way, you can feel the arteries furring up.
There are so many good Restaurants around County Durham and within easy driving distance of your cottage that we could not possibly list them all.
However the list below are the favourites of my family and the spots to head for recommended by our holidaymakers.
We have never had a bad meal in this restaurant.
The staff are friendly and accommodating and Sunday lunches especially are superb with a good range of beers and wines to accompany the meal.
Open most days all afternoon and evening it is an ideal stop when you do not feel like cooking after a hard day enjoying yourself in the Durham Dales.
